Seeking to gain an overview of who contributes to skateboarding’s publishing landscape, The Skateboarding Media Demographics survey also aims create gain insight as to where there is room for growth in regional, class and gender representation.
Skate Bylines has launched the first ‘Skateboarding Media Demographics’ survey, designed to explore and determine who contributes to skateboarding media.
The Skateboarding Media Demographics survey aims to account for the experiences of writers, photographers, videographers, artists and individuals of other creative professions, whose output contributes to journalistic coverage of skateboarding or skateboarding media, and the employment conditions throughout the field.
For the purpose of the Skateboarding Media Demographics survey, a “contributor” to skate media is defined as an individual who produces work about skateboarding that is published in/by at least one of the following mediums:
— A skateboarding magazine, either in print or through digital channels
— By a non-skateboarding publication, in print or digital (newspaper, website, wide circulation magazine)
— Licensed by a skateboarding brand (such as creating photographs, video or graphics for advertisements or social media content)
— Or an individual who is the editor-in-chief of a media outlet or a frequent self-publisher (such as a newsletter)

Please note that texts and research in the form of academic study of skateboarding are not relevant for the purpose of this survey. However, skate academics whose work has appeared in skateboarding media would be relevant participants.
This survey is divided into six sections with a total of 30 questions. An area for open comment is provided at the end.
For the purpose of determining findings, data from this research will be assessed by 4PLY Mag. Answers will remain anonymous, and no quotes will be directly attributed, although Skate Bylines may reach out to you for further comment. The findings will be collated into a report with an aim to publish it in Q1 of 2026.
